#E22 – Energy of the month: October

By now we transitioned into the fall and the fall is ruled by Metal energy.

Metal energy in October brings with it, themes like:

  • harvesting, picking the fruits of your hard work
  • letting go – like the leaves that fall from the trees
  • melancholy or sadness
  • slowing down 
  • but also immune system – colds and runny noses

We’re gonna dive deeper in those topics and like in every ‘energy of the month’ special I have some challenging awareness questions for you and a little energetic to-do-list for this month to get you going.

#E20 – Feeling stuck in life? This is how you overcome that!

Do you recognize the feeling of standing still? Not moving forward? As if you are stuck in the mud, immovable and hopeless?
Nothing comes out of your hands. You don’t have any good ideas. You are easily distracted.
Things don’t work out the way you want them to. You don’t feel like doing things. And you’re probably easily stimulated or irritated.
You know you have to get in motion but you don’t feel like it.
You just can’t seem to get yourself in the right mood…

How do you let go?

Energy. It is a popular subject nowadays. We talk about it so often and many magazines devote articles to it, but what is ‘energy’ actually? Where is it, where does it come from and how can you get more of it?

Everything is energy
Energy is everywhere. Everything consists of energy and so do you. Your body consists of energy that flows through countless pathways. Compare it with our electricity network. You can’t see the electricity with the naked eye, but you know it flows to all your power outlets through the cables hidden in the walls. Very handy. Similar processes take place in your body to supply all your tissues with energy.

If you have enough energy in your body and it all flows well then you can say: ‘I have good energy’. Then you are healthy and balanced, both physically and non-physically. Then you feel good and have the power to do what you want to do. Being balanced, having energy means so much more than being able to walk up the stairs without gasping. It also means that you recover well, for example from a sore back or an emotional situation.

Energy out of balance
When your energy is out of balance, then you could end up with all kinds of complaints. It often starts subtly: some fatigue, a pain here and a complaint there. But if you don’t recover properly from this, the symptoms get worse and before you know it, you will have a chronic problem.

Energy in balance
When your energy is in balance, you feel great. You feel alive. Then you wake up rested in the morning and start the day with pleasure. Then you are both physically and emotionally balanced. And of course you can have a bad day, catch a cold or have another problem with your health, but you will also recover from it.

The good news is that everyone – including you – can influence his or her energy balance. I’m not saying that you can control everything, but you certainly play a big part in this and I would like to help you with that.

For starters, I have an energy exercise for you. Simple, but extremely effective. It teaches you to be aware of your energy because that is the first step. Once you are aware of your energy then you can choose to use it differently. But let’s start from the beginning: with feeling your energy.

Exercise: feeling your energy
Sit down for a moment and close your eyes. Breathe in and out very quietly. Do this three times and feel how your body calms down. Now think of a moment in the past. A moment in time when you felt great. Relive that feeling for a few seconds and give this feeling a rating of nine. Then turn your attention back to the present moment and feel how you feel now. What rating would you give your energy now?

I advise you to do this simple exercise as often as you can, preferably every hour. It takes almost no time and you can do it anywhere. Once you have done the exercise a few times, you can also do it while standing and with your eyes open. Very handy when, for example, you are standing in line at the supermarket or when you are refueling your car.

Conclusion
Your energy is your most important asset and having good energy means so much more than having good stamina. The first step in mastering your energy is to be aware of your energy and that’s what this easy exercise does for you.

#E18 – Niksen; the art of doing nothing

We live in an amazing time with advanced technology and endless opportunities. But this amazing time comes with a disadvantage: we feel the urge to always DO something and that causes our brain to get overwhelmed and our energy to get depleted. And while it is so necessary, it has almost become an art – doing nothing. So much so that we actually have a word for it in Dutch! It’s called Niksen. It literally means ‘doing nothing’ and it’s the focus of this episode! 

So if you’re ever overworked, overwhelmed, or overtired…then listen up!

To master your energy, to master your life, you need to learn how to do this ‘niksen’ 😉

This is how your perfectionism stays under control

You know them. Those women who are already cleaning their windows at seven o’clock in the morning, dropped off the children impeccably dressed at school at eight o’clock and then arrived at work perfectly on time. After which she goes to the gym for an hour, picks up the children, brings them to swimming lessons so that she can get some groceries to cook a fresh meal herself. While she helps the kids with the homework, she types out a meeting and then prepares a very healthy meal. Which is exactly ready for the moment that her husband comes home so that they can eat while they discuss the experiences of the day. While she brings the eldest to the music lesson after dinner, she calls her boss to go through the planning of tomorrow and she can make a brief assignment in the car for the extra education she is doing. Once home, the bed ritual begins and as soon as the kids are in bed, she can quietly do the laundry and the ironing …

You probably know them. Those power women who seem to have an infinite amount of energy. Who are the perfect mother, housewife, employee, colleague, sports buddy, girlfriend, husband or lover. How do they do that? How is it possible that they have so much energy?

But is that really so? Is the energy of this woman balanced?
On the face of it, it seems that appearances can deceive.
You can recognize women with a good energy balance by the following:

She is not often tired, is usually energetic but not over the top (otherwise you are in the overflow).
She has few physical complaints and is otherwise quickly recovered.
She has bright eyes and a fresh appearance.
She sleeps well and wakes up well rested in the morning.
She is emotionally balanced and otherwise quickly recovered.
She takes good care of herself (and that is clear to the outside world).
She complains little or not at all, she has a positive outlook on her life.
She knows who she is, what she wants and what is good for her and she also strives for that.
She takes enough rest every day, so time and place, for herself.
You don’t see her flying around all day …

Of course there are more signs, but you already get a good idea. Do you think our power woman from the example meets all these points? Or could it be that she is not as balanced as it seems? Could it be that this power woman does all of these things because she thinks she “should” do it? Because she wants to be perfect? Because otherwise she is not good enough?

Are you aiming for the “Power Woman” status?
There is nothing wrong with doing your best. Or expect quality from yourself or others. But as soon as the pursuit of perfectionism only lowers your energy, it is not healthy. If your motivations to do something come from fear, for example fear of criticism, fear of not doing it good (enough), to disappoint others or out of fear of finding yourself worth less, then it will not make you healthier. And enjoyment is therefore not possible.

5 tips to stay on top of perfectionism

1 – Be aware: You cannot be liked 100% of the time by 100% of the people.
That is really impossible. The other way around you don’t always like everyone, do you? So be aware of that when you are once again working hard to be liked by everyone …

2 – Be aware: You will never be perfect.
Is that just a disappointment?! Being perfect does not exist at all. Because it can always be better, faster, more beautiful or more effective. So you can easily stop putting your energy in that.
And the great thing is: nobody expects you to be perfect! Pay attention to how your environment reacts when you do something not quite perfect. Yes, OK, maybe the one person who always has something to criticize for everything (note: even if you do it right) but do you have to build on that all your life?

That immediately brings me to a logical consequence of this point:

2a – You are good the way you are.
Appreciate yourself for how you are now and give yourself compliments for what you have done even if it could be more or better. You are not your job. You are not the household. You are not your achievements. Don’t let your performance distort your self-image. You are good the way you are now. Point.

3 – Perfectionism holds you back.
If you always strive for perfection then you are never done (see point 2). Then you keep delaying. Perfection inhibits your creativity and your action. And that is a shame because especially in this time everything is going fast. “Now” is the keyword. Living in the now but also acting now. Whether it’s about work or personal development: START! And if you have the time, then evaluate and improve.

4 – Experience the process.
There is only NOW, and it would be a shame if you are always on your way to “someday”. And when your project is finished soon? Then you probably have another task in the future. Is that fun? The result is not the most important thing in your life. The way there, the process is just as important, so consider that and ask yourself whether you are enjoying yourself …

5 – You learn from your mistakes.
Everybody makes mistakes. Big names really didn’t get big right away, they did everything, tried everything, made mistakes, evaluated, repaired and improved. This is how most have grown. So don’t be afraid to make a mistake or do something less perfect. More importantly: start!

Have you had enough and want to be able to practice? Then join one of my favorite exercises:

Make a list of three things that you are very good at. I am sure you can do it. Then choose one. Now make sure you do this less well throughout the week on purpose. Yes, you read that right, go crazy and do your best for 80%! You can do it! 🙂

5 tips to help others without losing energy

Do you often help other people? Do you often help people who have not actually asked for it? Giving unsolicited assistance costs unnecessary energy. You are better off using that on yourself.

Does that mean that you can never help someone again? Of course not! It is good to help each other, to be there for each other, but the art is to do that without lowering your energy. How do you do that?

The 5 most important rules in helping!

1 – Check your own energy level first.
You don’t take good care of yourself when you start helping someone else while your energy is already low. That is bad for your Earth energy and that will eventually cause all kinds of complaints. Of course, there are emergency situations but these are rare. Taking good care of yourself means that you consciously choose: yes, I will help and that costs me this much energy. Can I afford that or not?

2 – Ask yourself what you really want to achieve.
What benefit is there for you when you are helping others? There is almost always a benefit, realize that! Do you want to give ideas? Share your personal experience? Apply your knowledge? Do you want to be liked? Or do you want to please? Do you want appreciation or prestige?
Of course, you have the best in mind for the other, but does the other person ask for help? If not, why do you want to help? What desire of yourself is behind this? And what could you do better to satisfy this desire of yours? Here is a great opportunity for you to work on your personal development, especially if you are helping people all the time …

3 – Get the hints!
You should not “help” people who do not ask for help or do not indicate that they need help (and be honest with yourself). It is wasted energy and you are better off using it for yourself. Moreover, it is often not appreciated. Have you experienced not getting a thank you before?

So get the hints. Frowned eyebrows, crossed arms and more of this rejecting body language says enough. As well as statements like “yes but”, “not right now, this is possible later” or “thanks” after which they walk away. Do yourself and your energy a favor and get the hints. Stop offering to help and save your energy for your own personal development.

4 – What is helping?
Before you get back into your helping mode, ask yourself what helping really is. Do you help the other person by removing his or her problem? By telling the other person exactly how or what should be done? Is that really what that person needs?

I understand that when you have learned something you want to share it with everyone, that you want everyone to experience whatever you have experienced. I used to be like that, but I soon learned that I was not thanked for that. Moreover, I learned that everyone is at a different point in his or her development and that I also had to respect that. Everyone has their own path to walk and not everyone is at the same point as you. Try to see that. So be subtle, it is best to give them an idea, but as soon as you get a hint you are better off to stop and just be there for them, offer a listening ear. Nothing more.

5 –Be the good example
Be the change you want to see in the world. People follow your footsteps rather than your advice, so be an example. Inspire others with this and be ready to help others when they ask for it and only if you choose to!

#E16 – Overcoming Self-Doubt

It’s one of the biggest struggles we all have to deal with: overcoming our self-doubt in order to move forward. In this episode, we will explore the effect that self-doubt can have on your energy and your life. I will teach you how to recognize it, identify where it comes from, and defeat it.
